The view from the driver’s seat of Tata’s new T.14 Ultra FE+ is quite impressive through the expanse of the 180 degree windscreen as is the amount of information coming in via the carefully positioned side mirror array, meaning the operator has the best possible opportunity to see things as they are.

The Gerotek Vehicle Test Centre near Pretoria is an ideal place for truck testing as the roads are uncluttered and there is no oncoming traffic, meaning a good chance to examine vehicle features and abilities in safety.

The driver’s seat on the new T.14 is hydraulically sprung – as is the one on its smaller compatriot, the T.9 – and this allows not only for a comfortable ride but its forward and backwards movements mean even a shorty like me can achieve an optimum driving position.

The cabin layout of the two new Tata entries to the market is very similar to any of the people-mover MPVs on the local market with the dash-mounted six-speed manual gear lever giving the cabin walk-through capability. Except for the size of the steering wheel, it could be any of those MPV’s.

However, my time behind the wheel is short-lived and static and I am ushered across to the equally comfortable passenger seat to allow my driver, Gert, to take his place and head out to demonstrate the true capabilities of the new truck.


The T.9 has a GVM of 8 990 kg and is powered by a Common Rail diesel 3,3-litre engine with 114 kW at 2 600 r/min and 450 Nm from 1 500 r/min on offer, driving through a six-speed manual transmission, while the T.14 (GVM 14 700) has a 5,05-litre engine with 132 kW at 2 400 r/min and 590 Nm of torque from 1 000 r/min available, also using a six-speed gearbox.

The words ‘car-like’ interior are often used by automakers to describe the interior of their one-ton pickup trucks but this Tata really does have a car-like interior and Gert is quick to point out the size and layout of the three pedals is exactly the same as any passenger vehicle so no major foot movements are needed to find the right one.

With the standard air-conditioning keep the Highveld heat out, we head out onto the circular track  and Gert moves easily through the gears as we pick up speed, explaining the GBS 750 Syncromesh box makes the transition both up and down through the gears simple.

“It really is no harder than driving a manual car,” he chuckles.

While intended for high-speed testing, the circular track is not perfectly smooth and from my position I can see how the sprung driver’s seat is moving to absorb the road ripples and I mention this to Gert.


“We are actually feeling more bumps now because the truck is unladen,” he says. “With a load the combination of semi-elliptical lead springs with parabolic auxiliary springs at the rear and the parabolic springs at the front come into their own and the ride gets more comfortable.”

Still, it is not so I cannot enjoy a coffee on the move.

Gert continues: “The suspension setup has been carefully calibrated to provide the best possible ride comfort as well as ride stability in all weather and driving conditions, especially when cornering and braking.

“On the comfort side, this obviously translates to less ‘rock and roll’ inside the cabin, less stress and strain on the driver and that generally means less fatigue and safer operation.”

At the static launch of the two new trucks, Anurag Mehrotra, vice president of International Business for Tata Motors says the company vision is not so much about product or services but is dedicated to ‘connecting aspirations’.

“Connecting Aspirations is not a tagline but is a way of life for us at Tata Motors and this means looking at the entire spectrum of trucking and transport holistically. For example, the Ultra trucks are configured to create a good and comfortable workspace for the driver, rather than simply creating spec-driven vehicles.

“Also, we look closely at our fleet customers and how we can make it possible for them to do more trips a day and with fuel efficiency good enough for them to make more money per trip – and also making sure the vehicle does not go offroad or have lengthy downtimes.”

Both the engines fitted to the new trucks are Euro IV specification adjusted to run on South African Euro II grade fuel but still offer better fuel efficiency. The engines are not new and have been extensively road tested in Kenya where the fuel saving claim was comprehensively put to the test.

The newcomers are kitted as standard with anti-lock braking, come with a 5-year/500 000 km factory warranty and are fitted with the Fleet Edge telematics solution.

“Built on the internationally recognised Ultra platform, these trucks are engineered to cater to a diverse set of applications, deliver higher performance, vehicle utilisation, uptime and more revenue.

The two locally assembled Tata Ultra FE+ trucks launched in Johannesburg recently mark the start of a planned Ultrathon rollout of new models covering the full range in a series the Indian truckmaker has purpose-designed to suit African conditions.

The product move has started with the Ultra T.9 and Ultra T.14, both of which house Euro IV specification engines specifically engineered to run on local Euro II grade fuel but still provide significantly improved fuel efficiency.

Fuel prices likely to come down

The New Year appears to be starting on a happy note for motorists with the price of fuel likely to drop quite significantly next week, although this trend is not guaranteed to continue as the year moves on.

“Despite the volatile Rand and concerns around shipping routes in the Red Sea, local fuel prices are still expected to decrease when they are adjusted by the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy next Wednesday,” says the Automobile Association (AA). 

According to figures from the Central Energy Fund (CEF), ULP95 petrol is expected to be lower by around 54 c/ litre while ULP93 is set for a drop of around 39 c/litre. Diesel prices are expected to drop substantially by between 94 c/litre and R1,02 c/litre.

On Wednesday oil prices stabilised with some major shippers resuming passage following continued attacks which pushed oil prices higher. However, the downward movement in international product prices – oil prices – remains the main driver behind the expected decreases. The average Rand/US dollar exchange is playing a smaller role but is still contributing the expected decreases.

“Although we are expecting fuel to be cheaper in January, we remain concerned about the overall high prices which impact on all consumers. If the expected decreases are realised, petrol prices will still be higher than they were in January 2023, but diesel prices will be marginally cheaper than at the same time. We must see all of this in the context of consumers who are still recovering from steep fuel price hikes in September and October,” says the AA.

The AA further says while 2024 is starting on a positive note for consumers, it’s still too early to determine if the trend to lower prices will continue, especially given current geo-political developments which impact on international oil prices.

“For this reason, a sustainable solution to mitigating rising fuel costs is still necessary and until that solution is found, citizens will be at the mercy of fuel price hikes. We again call on government to urgently initiate a transparent review of the fuel pricing structure to seek this solution,” says the Association.

The Association says changes to this data are expected before the formal announcement by the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) ahead of Wednesday’s adjustment. However, it says any relief at this stage is welcome.

Mitsubishi Motors South Africa has been recognised as the ‘most improved’ at the recent Southern African Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (SAVRALA) Manufacturer of the Year Awards (MOTY).

Even though the majority of new vehicle sales are recorded as Dealer Sales, the vast majority of the money comes from corporate purchasing either directly as fleet pool vehicles or as company cars and car allowances – making fleet business a high riority for all manufacturers and importer.

Mitsubishi has expanded its fleet focused product offering with the launch of the Diamond fleet club, which offers members enhanced aftersales support and service.

Performance based

The SAVRALA MOTY awards are purely performance based and are determined through two surveys conducted by Lightstone with 37 car rental and leasing companies in South Africa, covering rental and leasing performance. These surveys gauge fleet customers interactions with the manufacturers they frequently deal with and whose vehicles are part of their fleets.

Most importantly, participating rental and leasing companies are required to involve all the relevant people in their operations who are knowledgeable about each of the criterion to complete the various sections of the surveys, resulting in a very accurate set of results.

“In more recent years Mitsubishi Motors SA set a number of goals with the aim of taking the brand to new heights. These goals included a clear strategy on becoming the mobility partner of choice to businesses of all sizes. This saw us refine our commercial vehicle offering and the aftersales value proposition for fleet clients.

“To be rewarded by SAVRALA as the most improved manufacturer shows that Mitsubishi Motors SA are making great strides in these areas,” says Nic Campbell, General Manager: Sales at Mitsubishi Motors South Africa (MMSA). 

In the rental category of the competition, manufacturers are judged on criteria including communication, support, maintenance, value, theft prevention and B-BBEE and Mitsubishi improved considerably in all these categories resulting in an overall improvement, across all categories of 12,0%.

Some of Mitsubishi’s biggest improvements recorded were in categories such as the availability of parts and the waiting time for a service.

In the leasing category Mitsubishi improved in many of the sub sectors of the scoring criteria which include communication, technical support, financial categories, dealer performance and B-BBEE.

Judging criteria

“SAVRALA shares detailed results of the annual survey with participating manufacturers and these scores across the variety of judging criteria have been a great tool in assisting Mitsubishi to improve our operations related to the rental and leasing customer journey,” says Campbell.

“Mitsubishi are always innovating with the goal of giving all our customers, whether they are walking into a dealership and new to the brand or have a long-standing relationship with us, as many of our fleet and leasing customers do, the best possible experience when interacting with our brand throughout the ownership journey,” adds Campbell.

A five-year and 700 000 kilometre warranty is on offer for new Isuzu truck buyers for less than R10 000 and guarantees the truck against breakdowns and mechanical failure for the duration of the warranty.  

Craig Uren, Senior Vice President: Revenue Generation at Isuzu says: “Isuzu is committed to helping our Customers keep their trucks on the road for longer and guarantees their durability and reliability. With the extended warranty on offer, for a nominal upfront cost of the purchase cost of the truck, you are getting more than double your normal warranty.

“The warranty guarantees the truck against breakdowns and mechanical failure for the duration of the warranty, as long as the customer correctly maintains their truck according to the maintenance schedule in the owner’s manual,” says Uren.  


Customers will need to elect to purchase the extended warranty at the same time as they purchase the new vehicle.  

“So, for example, if you buy your truck today, an extended warranty cannot be purchased six months down the line,” adds Uren. “If a failure occurs, and the Customer has maintained their truck according to the schedule, Isuzu will ensure the issue is resolved and return the truck to its original specification.

The first electric trucks from Volvo Trucks South Africa have officially hit the road with KDG Logistics, which is responsible for much of the car carrier transport locally, getting the keys to an FM 4x2 Tractor.

Volvo is offering its most popular extra heavy trucks in its electric line-up – the Volvo FH, the Volvo FM, and the Volvo FMX. They will be available in truck tractor or rigid configurations, from 4x2 to 8x4, giving it the industry’s most extensive portfolio of zero exhaust emission trucks.

“Volvo Trucks has been committed to social, environmental, and economic responsibility since the start of our company,” says Waldemar Christensen, managing director of Volvo Trucks South Africa.

“Now, protecting the environment is the biggest challenge we face. The Volvo Group is a leading force in the shift towards the electrification of the transportation, mobility, and equipment sectors, making a real impact on our customers’ efforts to reduce their carbon footprint.”

In total, the Swedish truck manufacturer has sold almost 5 000 electric trucks since 2019 in about 40 countries.

Surprised

Christensen said the company was pleasantly surprised by the amount of local interest in its electric trucks, and that the first movers in South Africa are companies that value their environmental impact and already have programs to reduce emissions.

“The size of the company is largely irrelevant. Transporters can see that electric drivelines are going to play a bigger role in our near future, and many want to get early exposure on how the technology works in real operations, so they are positioned well for the shift,” he says.

“There is also no single silver bullet transport solution that can address all the fleet owner's requirements. Therefore, Volvo Trucks offers gas-fuelled trucks, electric trucks and fuel cell trucks under its three-pronged approach. We believe electrification will happen segment by segment and region by region.”

“Our move to electric trucks was driven by our objective to be more efficient in every aspect of our business,” says Abdool Kamdar, KDG Logistics’ manager of Decarbonization and Net Zero.

“We believe what sets us apart from our competitors is the fact that we focus on operational and environmental efficiencies in our business, which includes steps to lessen our impact on the environment and enhance safety for all road users.”

Relationship

The KDG Group has a long standing relationship with Volvo Trucks and has 175 diesel units in its fleet already.

Eric Parry, Volvo Trucks SA’s sustainable solutions manager, said the trucks have been designed, developed and built to handle any major commercial operation that South African companies need to deal with.

“Our trucks are designed to handle high temperature ranges and a variety of operational conditions. With a driveline that has 490 kW or power and 2 400 Nm of torque, it will not struggle on the hills,” says Parry.

“One of the main advantages of going electric is it provides drivers with a silent and vibration-free ride while delivering smooth and massive power.”

Depending on the model, two or three electric motors combined with an I-Shift gearbox adapted for electromobility provide the drive.

Control

The power is handled by a traction control system also developed to master slippery surfaces. Different drive modes are available to set the desired performance, comfort and energy usage levels.

When fitted with six battery packs, depending on the application, it has 378 kWh of energy, ensuring sufficient range for most regional haul assignments.

Volvo’s electric trucks also meet the same high crash safety standards as the company’s other trucks and offer the same safety systems as the diesel models.

A Volvo electric truck will need to be serviced only once a year, so fleet downtime will be kept to a minimum. The company has also installed 120 kW DC fast chargers at each of its main dealerships, primarily as a workshop tool, but also to support demo vehicles if needed.

The Volvo electric truck’ range is up to 300 km, enough for most city and regional applications. However, the trucks can cover up to 500 km during a normal workday if a top-up charge is added, for example during the lunch break.

Volvo’s electric trucks can be charged with an AC charger (for example a charging box) at up to 43 kW and with a DC system (stationary charging station) with a capacity of up to 250 kW.

Using a 43 kW AC charger, it takes around nine hours to fully charge the batteries. With a 250 kW DC charger, the charging time is reduced to approximately two hours. The battery can be charged more quickly up to 80% capacity, in just the same way as a smartphone, because the charger slows down towards the end of the process to protect the battery cells.

Question

The question on everybody’s minds in South Africa is a lack of a consistent supply of electricity and how operators can work around this challenge to efficiently operate electric trucks.

“In a way, we believe it is all down to planning,” said Parry. “Operators will have the necessary tools to plan their charging options according to their workload and routes, even though there is load shedding.

“In addition, most of the first movers already have some sort of off-grid power solution and in a lot of cases, they can be upgraded to supplement grid charging.”

Parry explained at this stage, the electric trucks are mostly aimed at regional distribution customers. In most of those cases, they return to a home base at some point in the day. This is usually the point where charging makes the most sense. So public charging is not as relevant for these operations. Having control of their own charging allows customers to fix their costs of energy.”

Hino South Africa has completed its truck range for the country with the launch of a new 700 Series that has improved safety systems as well as lower fuel usage.

“Our current ranges of 200 and 300 Series medium trucks are proving very popular as is our 500 series in the heavy truck segment and now we will also have a strong competitor in the high volume, extra-heavy category,” says Anton Falck, Vice President of Hino South Africa. “Minimising downtime for our customers was a prime aim with the redesign of this important model.”

The exterior of the Hino 700 Series has undergone its first major design change in 14 years, with aerodynamic and safety benefits. From the grille, which has a three-dimension appearance, to the headlamps, this truck has a new frontal appearance, while the restyling of the cab has made it more spacious for the driver.



The interior has been completely redone too, with a major focus on improving comfort and ergonomics to cut driver fatigue. It is also easier to get in and out of the new cab.

There is a compact range of four basic models, a tipper, a freight carrier, and two truck tractors, all 6x4 configurations.

Power comes from derivatives of the 13-litre Hino E13C six-cylinder turbo-charged and intercooled diesel engine. The 2841 models are fitted with one version of this engine, developing 302 kW between 1 500 r/min and 1 800 r/min, together with a peak torque of 1 961 Nm between 1 400 r/min and 1 800 r/min.

The high-powered 2845 truck tractor utilises an engine model that produces 331 kW between 1 500 r/min and 1 800 r/min, with a peak torque of 2 157 Nm between 1 050 r/min and 1 400 r/min.

Fuel-saving changes include the switch from a variable nozzle type turbo-charger to a conventional type that facilitates a weight reduction of 13 kg. Significant fuel saving is possible when the standard Eco Mode system is used.

Both engines are mated to a ZF 16-speed Traxon automated manual transmission, offering fully automatic shifting with optional manual override.

The rear suspension has been given a makeover, resulting in a 20% weight reduction while performance is retained. Front and rear suspension are by leaf springs, while the power-assisted, variable ratio rack and pinion steering now has a variable hydraulic pump as a contributor to saving fuel.

Koyo, Goto the Chief engineer for the 700 Series, say: “We, at Hino Motors in Japan, have aimed to enhance safety through the adoption of active driver support systems and preventive safety systems, as well as improving driver comfort with a much quieter cab, and improved ride comfort. The new, high-functionality seats can accommodate a wider range of driver body heights in comfort which will reduce fatigue and improve driving efficiency. I am confident that we have succeeded in developing a truck that provides a safe and comfortable working environment.”



New safety systems include the Pre-Collision System (PCS) which uses a millimetre wave radar and an image-based sensor to predict a vehicle or pedestrian on the road ahead, a Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS) and a Staggering Warning (SW) which alerts the driver if the truck starts weaving over the road.

If the staggering continues without being addressed by the driver, then the PCS prepares to activate quickly.

A further safety feature is the Driver Monitor Camera (DMC) which constantly checks the driver’s posture, face direction, and the state of the eyelids – open or closed. If the system detects insufficient driver focus on the road in front of the truck, then the driver is alerted with a buzzer and a warning message on the dashboard to help prevent a collision.



Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), which uses a millimetre wave radar to detect preceding vehicles to automatically maintain an appropriate vehicle-to-vehicle distance, is fitted as standard.

All models have engine retarders as standard, while the Freight Carrier and TT models have ZF intarders for additional brake assistance fitted as standard. This, together with a crash bag for the driver, anti-lock brakes, seat-mounted seat belts and side impact beams in the doors complete the package.

The new 700 Series is the first Hino in South Africa to feature multi-functional controls on the steering wheel and these include the Bluetooth audio and hands-free operation of the telephone.

Air-conditioning, an AM/FM audio system with CD player, USB, AUX and Bluetooth, power windows, central locking and a transponder immobiliser key are all standard.

The new Hino 700 Series truck range is covered by one of the most comprehensive warranties for extra-heavy trucks in South Africa. The vehicle, powertrain and chassis frame warranties on the tipper are for 24 months, irrespective of distance covered, while the other models have 36-month warranties. There is a 48-month/unlimited distance warranty on cab corrosion.



Service intervals are every 15 000 km / 250 hours for the tipper and every 30 000 km for the other models, although these may change depending on operating conditions.

‘N’ stands for ‘new’ and JAC Motors has expanded the N-Series of trucks in South Africa with the addition of the N140 9-tonne powered by a Cummins 4,5-litre engine.

"A trademark of the N-Series is its excellent fuel efficiency across the range. The new N140 continues in that tradition," says Karl-Heinz Göbel, Chief Executive Officer of JAC Motors South Africa. "Add to that its low cost of ownership, robust chassis design and durable drivetrain, and you have a truck suitable for various modern-day transport applications."



The N140's Euro 3, Cummins 4,5-litre ISB four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine produces 154 kW at 2 300 r/min and 740 Nm of peak torque between 1 200 r/min and 1 800 r/min. 

This powerplant features advanced fuel injection technology that delivers more power using less fuel, resulting in lower operating costs. Durability is also essential, and this engine includes wear-resistant components such as a cast-iron cylinder block and forged steel crankshaft, making it ideal for long-lasting use, minimising downtime and maintenance costs. 

Emissions

Compliant with Euro 3 regulations, the turbo-diesel engine reduces harmful emissions, providing a greener option for operators looking to minimise their environmental impact while maintaining a high level of performance.

The N140 is paired with a synchromesh six-speed manual transmission and a hydraulic-assisted clutch. The drivetrain setup allows for low engine RPMs at cruising speeds, reducing fuel consumption.

"Cummins and JAC Motors have a 25-year successful relationship. In 2018, the two companies formed a joint venture, resulting in a number of our trucks being fitted with high-quality, clean and fuel-efficient engines with world-class technological and powertrain capabilities," says Göbel.

The N140 has a heavy-duty ladder-frame chassis stamping and welding treatment process and sits on a front and rear semi-elliptical multi-leaf spring suspension providing better stability and less chassis roll in all load states and on any road surface.

The N140 supports a wheelbase of 5 300 mm and offers a payload of 9 000 kg. Its dimensions are 8 890 mm (L) x 2 348 mm (W) x 2 475 mm (H), making it suitable for various body applications.

The N140 features a Dual-circuit Air Brake system, including an Air Dryer, an anti-lock braking System and a Load Sensing Proportioning Valve (LSPV) for increased stopping power and driver control to prevent wheel lock-up under emergency braking conditions.



"The N140 offers the built-in flexibility of a chassis-cab design that allows for specific configurations based on unique transportation needs. With its powerful and fuel-efficient engine and robust suspension, it is suitable for various transport applications," says Göbel.

The ergonomically designed cab has wider door apertures, footsteps and safety climbing handles that allow for easy entry and exit, which is less tiring for the driver and passengers. 

The reinforced cab floor increases driver protection, while the double rear-view exterior mirrors improve visibility. LED Daytime Running Lights, height adjustable headlights, a reverse warning buzzer, a seatbelt warning alarm and a tilt-and-telescoping multi-function steering wheel with radio and cruise control settings are all standard as are an air-conditioner, power windows, a 12V Accessory Power Outlet, and a radio with an MP3 player and Bluetooth, including a USB.

Although it has been operating as an independent company for some time, the transition of Daimler Truck Southern Africa was formalised this week with the official opening of its purpose-designed headquarters and campus near Pretoria.

The 12-hectare site houses the main offices, training centre, used and new vehicle retail facilities and a dedicated Daimler Truck Financial Services company.

With 600 employees across the campus, the DTSA headquarter and TruckStore facilities were designed with a clear intention of creating a sustainable and comfortable workplace with features such as facades and windows screened to limit solar heat gain, while reducing electrical loads.

High-specification low-E double glazing further ensures low heat gains and losses. The roof slopes to the north to allow for future solar installation and rainwater collection on one facade. Parking bays and roof areas are utilised to generate electricity and reduce reliance on non-renewable sources while 752 solar panels provide 350 kWp electricity.

The first electrically-powered extra-heavy Volvo truck is on South African roads as part of the homologation testing ahead of delivery to the first customer, KDG Logistics.

Eric Parry, Volvo Trucks SA’s sustainable solutions manager, took the Volvo FM 4x2 truck-tractor through its paces on a trip from the company’s dealer in Durban to its facilities in Johannesburg – a 600 km journey, with only one stop for charging.

“We aimed to prove that an extra heavy electric truck like this, can drive long distances. Even though we did not carry any payload, it still gave us a good indication of just what this truck is capable of,” says Parry. “Generally, battery electric trucks are used in regional distribution, operating in and around cities, running from distribution centres to stores, etc. But with proper planning, customers will be able to do so much more.”

Volvo Trucks South Africa is bringing in its complete extra-heavy electric truck range, which includes FH, FM and FMX models in truck-tractor and rigid configurations. Axle combinations will also include 4x2 through to 8x4 models. The full load on the first FM units will be 44 tonnes GCM (Gross Combination Mass). With a drive line that has 490 kW of power and 2 400 Nm of torque, it will definitely not struggle to get the job done.



“Locally, there has been a lot of activity and interest around electromobility, a lot quicker than we anticipated, and the enthusiasm and opportunities in South Africa are there,” says Sally Rutter, Volvo Trucks South Africa’s sales director. “Irrespective of local challenges when it comes to loadshedding and infrastructure, a lot of customers are looking at setting up their own charging infrastructures to accommodate electromobility and their own sustainability goals.”

“These trucks can run meaningful kilometres in a day and if you have your charging set-up optimised, you can extend that range quite comfortably and match your operations to it,” added Parry. “Within regional operations, public charging is not relevant for these types of fleets and having control of their own charging will allow customers to fix their energy costs.”

Volvo Trucks electric trucks are designed to operate in a wide range of climates and environments. This includes higher altitudes and warmer conditions typically found in South Africa.

“These electric trucks will be working commercial vehicles, and are designed to be treated and driven as such,” said Parry. “We are excited about Volvo Trucks’ electromobility future in South Africa.”

There is a strong case to be made for transport operators to use remanufactured replacement parts that goes well beyond the simple cost saving.

Transport operators have to consider a multitude of fixed and variable factors that have an impact on their cost of operation, and subsequently, their business’ bottom line. These include fuel costs, financing, labour, insurance, maintenance and repair.

When a vital component breaks down the question that inevitably arises is how you should replace it. Repair, buy new or go for a remanufactured part?

To make the right decision for your business it’s vital to consider all your options to essentially solve the same problem.  

“Buying a new part could be your first instinct when something breaks down; after all you want something that works, has a warranty, and is guaranteed to fit your truck. A new part will also come with the latest technology, have the longest life expectancy and work efficiently. 

"But it will also mean a higher price tag and you will have to evaluate how this will impact your operating costs and total cost of ownership of your truck,” says Eric Parry, sustainable solutions manager at Volvo Trucks South Africa.

When you repair a part, the malfunctioning or worn component gets replaced while the rest stays the same. While repairing can save you money it’s good to be aware repairing also almost always comes with certain downtime as the truck will have to be in the workshop for a while.

Understanding remanufacturing

Before considering whether remanufactured parts are the right option for your business, it’s important to distinguish remanufacturing from rebuilding a piece of equipment.

Remanufacturing is a standardised industrial process in which worn-out parts are returned to a condition that is as good as new in technical specifications and performance. It is usually a good idea to replace heavier components with remanufactured parts as these tend to be more expensive.

Engine, chassis parts, transmission brakes and steering are just a few of such components. When it comes to electronics, starter motors, control units and alternators can be replaced using remanufactured parts as well.

“When we remanufacture parts at Volvo Trucks this process includes dismantling, cleaning, re-machining, assembling and testing the equipment. The process is much like the original manufacturing process, except that some of the components have had a previous life,” says Olga Naert, remanufacturing business development manager at Volvo Trucks.

There are a few reasons why a remanufactured part might be the right investment if you are facing the breakdown of a critical component.

“The most obvious is of course the lower cost compared to a new part. When you buy a reman unit, all parts will be updated with the latest technology,” explained Naert. “Quality is another plus as remanufactured parts meet OEM standards for performance and always comes with a warranty.”



Last but not least, a remanufactured part also has a much lower impact on the environment as a lot less raw material, energy and water is used in the production process.

Concern about the environment and diminishing resources is a great reason to choose remanufacturing.

A newly produced part is made using 100% new raw material whereas a remanufactured part only uses 15% since most of the material comes from the core (the faulty part).

“Using remanufactured parts also saves energy, reduces landfill waste and it means that dangerous residuals inside worn components are taken care of,” adds Parry. “The process of remanufacturing, which is labour intensive, can also be seen as sustainable from a societal perspective as it creates demand for high-skilled jobs.”

In addition to quality and lower cost, remanufactured parts can also be a quick fix compared to repairing thanks to their growing popularity and availability. In fact, choosing a remanufactured part could put you back on the road just as quickly as purchasing a new product.

“At the end of the day whatever purchase strategy you decide on will depend on the specific needs of your business,” explained Parry. “Remanufacturing can be a great option if you are cost sensitive but also want a high-quality product. The cost of a remanufactured part can be up to 50% cheaper than a new one, depending on the type of part.”

Isuzu Trucks is in full focus mode as far as it targeting fleet operators and the whole life operating costs of the vehicles it offers.

“Quality is not negotiable,” says Craig Uren, Senior Vice President of Isuzu Motors South Africa. “But the enemy of trucking is downtime and even the best truck can leave productive service if parts are not available.

Technology

“First-in-class has been the success of Automated Manual Transmissions (AMT) – with 21 000 AMT model units sold, this Isuzu technology is well accepted. Isuzu niche models are doing exceptionally well – refuse compactors and 4X4 models.”



A package of services is available to Isuzu fleets under the title of Isuzu Mobility. This provides Fixed Cost operating for individuals and companies – funding for maintenance, servicing and repairs is sourced from advanced payments for a period or kilometres travelled. Mitsubishi Motors launches the start of the facelifted Triton range rollout in the form of the single cab workhorse to the South African market.

The modernised single cab Triton GL, gets a black grille, black door handles, mirror, tailgate handle, black rear bumper and black side steps. The interior of GLS double cab models boast rear air vents, auto headlamps and auto wipers.



The new entry-level Single Cab Triton provides the fleet owner with quality, reliability, durability and fuel efficiency to make a bold, but a reliable statement.

“The launch of the Single Cab is firmly directed at the fleet and small business market and aimed to provide a cost-effective solution in the face of the steadily rising price of fuel and the recent repo rates hike,” explains Jeffrey Allison, General Manager: Marketing at MMSA.

Powerful engine and transmission

The Mitsubishi Triton 4x2 Single Cab is powered by Mitsubishi’s proven DOHC intercooled turbo-diesel engine, with 100 kW of power and 324 Nm of peak torque on tap.

An overall fuel consumption average of 8,0 l/100 km will give fleet owners some comfort and relief from the high fuel prices. The 75-litre fuel tank will ensure that economical long distance-travel is matched with the shorter workhorse power of the eager 2,4-litre diesel engine.

The new Single Cab is exclusively available as a 4x2 with a six-speed manual transmission.

It features a limited-slip differential, which along with the weight saved by the 4x4 gear, improves performance and fuel economy. The limited-slip differential provides effective, well-proven traction when one wheel slips and controlled power is transmitted to all the driving wheels, redistributing the engine's torque to the wheels with the most grip.

“In some situations the limited slip diff will perform as good as a 4WD vehicle with open differentials”, it offers more control over power delivery, explains Jeffrey Allison.

Robust, dependable, and versatile to the core





Underneath the head-turning styling is a rigid ladder chassis, designed to provide the best possible handling and ride comfort, irrespective of the road surface.

The suspension setup consists of double wishbones with coil springs and a stabiliser bar up front, while the rugged above-the-axle leaf spring rear suspension provides outstanding traction and load-carrying capacity of up to 1-ton.

The single handle on the tailgate enables one-handed operation, while four integrated cargo hooks mean that loads can be secured safely and with ease.

Practical, yet durable 205R16C steel wheels are fitted. Seats are covered in high-grade, tough, vinyl for dust-beating practicality.

Innovative safety and features

Says Allison: “Some of the Triton’s most striking exterior features include Mitsubishi’s ‘Dynamic Shield’ front design, which incorporates a high hood line and beefy-looking front view. At the same time sculpted body curves with contrasting sharp lines, extended wheel flares and bright accents exude strength.

“Add to this halogen headlamps and, it is obvious this bakkie is slated to be a trusty workhorse.”



Warranty and service

Cost of ownership is low, as the Single Cab is priced R75 000 cheaper than it’s Double Cab sibling and will set you back only R409 995,00. Replacement of common parts in the case of accidents or other damages were also carefully considered to lower the ownership cost.

The entire commercial vehicle line-up – including the Triton Double Cab GL – is covered by a three-year/100 000 km manufacturer’s warranty as standard, along with a five-year/90 000 km service plan. Five-year/unlimited km roadside assistance is also included. Service intervals are set at every 10 000 km.

“Looking ahead for Triton range we should end the year off with more than 10 derivates so there’s still a lot to be excited about with a few more additions to the Triton range on the horizon,” says Allison.

“This forms part of our 2023 product offensive, adding to Triton Xtreme 4x2 introduction, GL Double cab and a wider range of ASX Aspire, ASX ES and Pajero Sport Aspire.”

Whole life operating cost translated into cents per kilometre is the core focus of fleet owners and transport operators, particularly in the trucking industry and, while service or maintenance contracts have been around for years, Isuzu Motors SA has added an innovation.

This is the Isuzu Mobility Cents Per Kilometre (CPK) maintenance contract. What is different about a CPK contract? It is based on the actual kilometres travelled and can be applied to all new Isuzu trucks with less than 9 000 km on the odometer while under 12 months old at point of sale.



The CPK plan is for companies only and is paid monthly, billed according to the kilometers travelled.

Refund

VAT is a critical component of truck financing. The VAT refund can be applied to the CPK contract to make this Isuzu service product even more cost effective.

The CPK plan allows the company to match its revenue generated by a particular vehicle to the actual expense incurred in a particular month – it also follows seasonal trends such as limited distances covered during low season. In addition, should a vehicle be off the road for crash repairs there will be no maintenance charges in the absence of kilometres covered. There is no minimum billing per month.

Businesses can maximize their cashflow paying monthly only for the kilometers driven and not just distance predicted. This allows businesses to record and manage income and expenses accurately for a particular period.

Management

Tracking fleet utilisation is a key discipline of fleet management. The CPK plan introduces accurate, real-time measurement how the truck fleet is being utilised, and then again down to the level of individual vehicles on specific routes.



Telematics are adjunct to effective and modern fleet maintenance. Isuzu satisfies modern fleet management expectations with the most up to date telematics system. Telematics offers real-time fleet management. Telematics is also leading evidence in any court action following a road incident and thus protects a driver against spurious claims.

FAW Trucks South Africa is expanding its local offerings with the introduction of the new JH6 33.420FT 6x4 truck tractor.

Strength

Seating

Torque

The 11 040 cc Euro 2 specification six-cylinder inline engine is water-cooled, turbo-charged and has an intercooler, producing 312 kW at 1 900 r/min and 1 900 Nm of torque from 1 200 r/min.

The Bosch brand manual injection pump is specifically made for African application, while the gear shifting booster makes driving feel like a car, removing much of the stress, especially on long-haul journeys – as does the  Superior Engine brake of 190 kW.



The 12-speed manual syncromesh gearbox is matched to a set of ratios specifically designed to provide optimum performance and fuel efficiency, irrespective of whether it is operating in rural areas or on the open road.

Power

Semi-elliptical leaf springs with double-acting shock absorbers comprise the front suspension, while the rear has semi-elliptical leaf springs with auxiliary springs while stopping power comes from the dual circuit, full air brakes with anti-locking.
