Getting on the gas with Isuzu

Getting on the gas with Isuzu

The fact 20 Isuzu long wheelbase vehicles can use CNG underscores a significant advancement in fuel options for truck fleets. Fuel consumption is the largest operational cost for any truck fleet. Integrating a Compressed Natural Gas - Diesel Dual Fuel (CNG-DDF) system for these Isuzu models places them at a competitive edge in the fluctuating fuel market.

This approach offers reliable, cost-effective, and consistent mobility solutions. The automotive industry widely acknowledges the use of CNG, with approximately 14 million Natural Gas Vehicles (NGVs) operating across 80 countries.

CNG is a different technology unlike LPG, commonly associated with applications such as flame-grilled steaks.

Over the past five years, Isuzu Motors South Africa (IMSAf) has been testing CNG-DDF converted trucks, demonstrating their reliability. CNG, short for Compressed Natural Gas, primarily consists of methane, while LPG, or Liquified Petroleum Gas, comprises propane and butane. While CNG is a viable alternative to petrol and diesel in vehicles, LPG finds use in industrial, refrigeration, agricultural, and catering sectors.

Notably, CNG is lighter than air, dispersing quickly in case of a leak, and posing a lower ignition risk compared to LPG, which can spread on the ground and ignite more easily. CNG's lower carbon content also results in fewer carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide emissions, making it a safer and more environmentally friendly option.

In the quest for greener fleet operations, CNG offers numerous benefits. It significantly reduces the carbon footprint by emitting 20%-25% less greenhouse gases and virtually no toxic pollutants. Other advantages include reduced particulate emissions, quieter engine operation due to smoother combustion, lower fuel consumption, diminished fuel theft and adulteration, fewer engine carbon deposits and improved engine oil quality.

Operating the Isuzu CNG-DDF system is straightforward, retaining the standard diesel engine configuration with a 100% diesel fallback option. A simple button press switches between Dual Fuel mode (Diesel/Gas mixture) and 100% Diesel mode, with automatic reversion to diesel when the natural gas cylinder is empty or if the CNG system detects a fault. The system boasts quick gas filling times compared to the lengthy charging required for electric trucks, although driver training remains necessary.

Engine performance and efficiency remain consistent in Dual Fuel mode, with engine torque and power nearly unchanged, ensuring unaffected trip times. A special engine control unit determines the optimal gas/diesel fuel mixture, maintaining similar torque and power levels.

From a safety perspective, CNG is advantageous as it disperses harmlessly into the atmosphere when leaked, aided by an added odorant for easy detection. It has a narrow flammability range (5%-15%) compared to petrol (1%-8%), and its safety record is statistically superior to conventional fuels. Additionally, CNG is non-toxic.

Considering the volatile diesel fuel prices, with coastal rates at 21,91/litre and a 400-litre tank costing nearly R8 800, along with global oil market uncertainties, adopting CNG becomes a strategic decision beyond mere cost considerations.

However, the distribution network for CNG remains a challenge, with availability currently limited to the Gauteng region. Municipalities represent an ideal application for CNG due to environmental benefits, reduced fuel consumption, anti-theft advantages, and centralized refilling. The CNG gas cylinders, while adding to the vehicle's tare mass and reducing payload, do not affect the Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) and Gross Combination Mass (GCM).

The ability to fit CNG-DDF systems as an option on 20 Isuzu long wheelbase models significantly benefits fleet replacement planning. Tools like the TruckScience Axle Weight Calculator, available at TruckScience.com, help understand the weight implications of CNG equipment and calculate payload capacity effectively.

Colin-on-Cars - Extended warranty from Isuzu

Colin-on-Cars - Extended warranty from Isuzu

A five-year and 700 000 kilometre warranty is on offer for new Isuzu truck buyers for less than R10 000 and guarantees the truck against breakdowns and mechanical failure for the duration of the warranty.

Craig Uren, Senior Vice President: Revenue Generation at Isuzu says: “Isuzu is committed to helping our Customers keep their trucks on the road for longer and guarantees their durability and reliability. With the extended warranty on offer, for a nominal upfront cost of the purchase cost of the truck, you are getting more than double your normal warranty.

“The warranty guarantees the truck against breakdowns and mechanical failure for the duration of the warranty, as long as the customer correctly maintains their truck according to the maintenance schedule in the owner’s manual,” says Uren.

Customers will need to elect to purchase the extended warranty at the same time as they purchase the new vehicle.

“So, for example, if you buy your truck today, an extended warranty cannot be purchased six months down the line,” adds Uren. “If a failure occurs, and the Customer has maintained their truck according to the schedule, Isuzu will ensure the issue is resolved and return the truck to its original specification.

"Owning and using your Isuzu enables you and your organisation to continue to build your business with the total value offered by our trucks,” he adds.

Colin-on-Cars - Isuzu Trucks fully focused

Colin-on-Cars - Isuzu Trucks fully focused

Isuzu Trucks is in full focus mode as far as it targeting fleet operators and the whole life operating costs of the vehicles it offers.

“Quality is not negotiable,” says Craig Uren, Senior Vice President of Isuzu Motors South Africa. “But the enemy of trucking is downtime and even the best truck can leave productive service if parts are not available.

“Trucking uptime is the result of many support factors coming together at Isuzu Motors South Africa and it all starts with an Isuzu truck range from which it is easy to select a truck model with the correct gross vehicle or gross combination mass (GVM or GCM).”

Any truck operator will confirm that selecting the right truck for the task will in the long-term result in the lowest cents/kilometre (CPK). Vehicle section starts at the rear where a custom-built cargo body matches the payload and work to be done – it is not about one size fits all.

Prediction

“Our consulting, vehicle selection, performance prediction and costing services are considerably enhanced by our association as full licensees of Truck Science TransSolve software. This enables Isuzu and our dealers to forecast trucking productivity with reasonable accuracy, a service that Isuzu fleet owners appreciate.”

Isuzu has also been a leader with specialist models that reduce CPK while increasing productivity and safety.

Technology

“First-in-class has been the success of Automated Manual Transmissions (AMT) – with 21 000 AMT model units sold, this Isuzu technology is well accepted. Isuzu crew cabs are starting to become a common sight on our roads instead of people perched on top of the cargo – an increase in fleet safety. Isuzu niche models are doing exceptionally well – refuse compactors and 4X4 models.”

A package of services is available to Isuzu fleets under the title of Isuzu Mobility. This provides Fixed Cost operating for individuals and companies – funding for maintenance, servicing and repairs is sourced from advanced payments for a period or kilometres travelled. For Isuzu trucks this is referred to as CPK – Cents Per Kilometre maintenance plan.

Innovative

The first of its kind in South Africa, Isuzu Motors South Africa is now offering an innovative aftersales solution in the form of Variable Warranty plans. These are specifically tailored to fit the needs of short, medium, or long-haul operators.

Isuzu also has the most up to date telematics system. Telematics offers real-time fleet management and driver development – it is an essential component of driver training. Telematics is also leading evidence in any court action following a road incident and thus protects a driver against spurious claims.

The entire Isuzu range benefits from a telematics-ready truck and stolen vehicle recovery hardware installed at factory. This includes a panic button and driver ID tag reader already installed. Compatible with the MixTelematics fleet management system, it is also compatible with existing third-party fleet management systems at a small additional cost. The stolen vehicle recovery service ready – BEAME – has been installed for some years now.

“We are proud to offer Isuzu operators a complete suite of services,” says Uren. “Isuzu comes with a package of solutions – we look forward to partnerships with you for the long run.”

Colin-on-Cars - Isuzu launches new maintenance deal for trucks

Colin-on-Cars - Isuzu launches new maintenance deal for trucks

Whole life operating cost translated into cents per kilometre is the core focus of fleet owners and transport operators, particularly in the trucking industry and, while service or maintenance contracts have been around for years, Isuzu Motors SA has added an innovation.

This is the Isuzu Mobility Cents Per Kilometre (CPK) maintenance contract. What is different about a CPK contract? It is based on the actual kilometres travelled and can be applied to all new Isuzu trucks with less than 9 000 km on the odometer while under 12 months old at point of sale.

The CPK plan is for companies only and is paid monthly, billed according to the kilometers travelled.

Refund

VAT is a critical component of truck financing. The VAT refund can be applied to the CPK contract to make this Isuzu service product even more cost effective.

The CPK plan allows the company to match its revenue generated by a particular vehicle to the actual expense incurred in a particular month – it also follows seasonal trends such as limited distances covered during low season. In addition, should a vehicle be off the road for crash repairs there will be no maintenance charges in the absence of kilometres covered. There is no minimum billing per month.

Businesses can maximize their cashflow paying monthly only for the kilometers driven and not just distance predicted. This allows businesses to record and manage income and expenses accurately for a particular period.

Management

Tracking fleet utilisation is a key discipline of fleet management. The CPK plan introduces accurate, real-time measurement how the truck fleet is being utilised, and then again down to the level of individual vehicles on specific routes.

Telematics are adjunct to effective and modern fleet maintenance. Isuzu satisfies modern fleet management expectations with the most up to date telematics system. Telematics offers real-time fleet management. Telematics is also leading evidence in any court action following a road incident and thus protects a driver against spurious claims.

Telematics

The entire Isuzu range benefits from a telematics-ready truck and stolen vehicle recovery hardware installed at factory. This includes a panic button and driver ID tag reader already installed. Compatible with the MixTelematics fleet management system, it is also compatible with existing 3rd party fleet management systems at a small additional cost. The stolen vehicle recovery service ready – BEAME – has been installed for some years now.

The CPK Plan is a maintenance and service plan and warranty all together with the standard exclusions that are excluded in the market for these types of products, such as tyres, top-up oils, sound equipment (radios), truck bodies and anything damaged, missing or broken.

Senior Vice President Revenue Generation Southern African Customs Union, Craig Uren of Isuzu Motors South Africa, says: “Isuzu Mobility CPK Maintenance Plan is a true component of Isuzu as a lifecycle brand. Isuzu’s truck brand leadership in Southern Africa for the past 10 years is based on service – we are a service organization that also sells new Isuzu trucks.”

Colin-on-Cars - Isuzu moves to Euro V tech

Colin-on-Cars - Isuzu moves to Euro V tech

Isuzu Motors South Africa is ramping up its contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by introducing Euro V technology to its new generation N and F series range of trucks.

While South Africa’s vehicle population of 11-million road vehicles is only 0,79% of the world total, responsible Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and fleet operators cannot, and do not, overlook the harmful effects of exhaust emissions.

As from 2008, all vehicles sold in South Africa had to comply with Euro II – Euro III and IV have not been compulsory in South Africa while Euro VI has already been introduced in Europe.

Distinction

There is an important distinction between greenhouse gases and European emission standards that are driving both diesel fuel and diesel engine technology – Euro emission standards impact on quality of air, greenhouse gases impact on the climate and the aim of Euro emissions standards is to reduce the levels of harmful exhaust emissions, chiefly: Nitrogen oxides (NOx) Carbon monoxide (CO) and Hydrocarbons (HC).

The success of Euro standards is linked to the quality of diesel fuel, particularly the sulphur content ratio.

Sulphur oxides are destroyers of filtration equipment. While 50 ppm sulphur (parts per million) is now generally available, regulations will limit sulphur in diesel to 10 ppm  so Isuzu’s truck introduction of Euro V standards is timeous and matches the change in fuel standards.

Treatment

The Move to Euro V comes with after-treatment in the exhaust system. A combined unit comprising a Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) and a Particulate Oxidation Catalyst (POC) for the N-Series and DOC for the F-Series ensures that emission is limited to Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and Water (H2O).

The advantages of this system is there is no need for any additives such as urea (AdBlue) to make the technology work for a clean exhaust.

Colin-on-Cars - Isuzu pitches in

Colin-on-Cars - Isuzu pitches in

The South African Automotive Masterplan (SAAM) aims to achieve 60% localisation of components by 2035 and Isuzu Motors South Africa has pitched in with an investment of R580-million – a move that includes provision of the supplier tooling needed to manufacture specific components in preparation for the recently launched all-new 7th generation Isuzu D-MAX bakkie.

This has been a four-year journey for Isuzu and one they have travelled together with their local suppliers, as they embarked on a new sourcing strategy at the beginning of 2018.

Technical
The process included classifying local suppliers that had the technical capability to manufacture a list of Isuzu components required for the new D-MAX bakkie.

Billy Tom, Isuzu Motors South Africa President and CEO says, “Localisation is essential in transforming the automotive sector. SAAM 2035 could see the automotive industry growing from 600 000 to 1,4-million vehicles a year in production.

Opportunity
"This presents a huge opportunity for us to support black-owned automotive suppliers in building their businesses in the industry. It will help drive transformation and create jobs."

“With the relevant commodities intellectual property rights secured we’ve collaborated with our local supply partners to develop the necessary capabilities to sustainably manufacture those commodities in South Africa,” says Komane Pitso, Isuzu Motors South Africa Senior Vice President Commercial Operations.

Consequent to the R580-million investment, suppliers now have the necessary machinery and equipment required to manufacture the components needed by Isuzu.

Process
Through this process Isuzu has had the opportunity to work with 107 local component manufacturers, maintaining a local value add content footprint and creating at least 235 new job opportunities at local component manufacturers.

One such example of our localisation strategy is the partnership between Isuzu Motors South Africa and 73% black-owned supplier Acoustics, based in Gqeberha. They were awarded with both the sound and carpet assembly contracts specifically for the new D-MAX bakkie.

Assisted
Responsible for the manufacturing of smaller boot liners, Acoustics have assisted Isuzu in achieving an industry first through the installation of local vinyl mats.

“We have to do things differently if we are to draw on local content, and Acoustics is an example of drawing on local content and capabilities. Over the last few decades design capability has transitioned to being more multinational, so we have to get involved locally,” says Pitso.

“Great strides have been made in the alliance between the automotive industry and government, and the progressive automotive policies in the country are testament to the strength of the pro-government/industry collaboration.

"But this isn’t enough, the automotive industry still faces tough challenges in accelerating localisation and developing a future-proof supply chain, and without localisation the automotive industry will struggle to remain competitive.” concludes Pitso.

Colin-on-Cars - Isuzu upgrades new gen mu-X

Colin-on-Cars - Isuzu upgrades new gen mu-X

The oft underrated Isuzu mu-X moves into its second generation and launches locally with a new 3,0-litre diesel engine offering more power and torque, while the car sports significantly uprated technology.

“The new mu-X is a massive step-up for Isuzu. It represents a shift in how customers will view vehicles in this segment in terms of ride quality, luxury, and technology. The new mu-X will not only attract more buyers in this segment but is likely to attract buyers from other segments as well,” says Craig Uren, Senior Vice President Isuzu Sales and Marketing.

The new mu-X is one of the safest vehicles on the road with a 5-star ANCAP rating. The safety rating is driven by Isuzu’s innovative safety systems such as the addition of a centre crash bag between the driver and the front passenger. The mu-X also benefits from the use of high tensile steel in key parts of the body structure, making it stronger for better occupant protection and driving performance while being lighter than the outgoing model.

The side profile of the mu-X is dominated by a signature line running from front to rear, linking the arrow motif headlamps with the rear light 3D winglets, while body coloured door handles and chrome window moulding complement the side character line. Exterior rear-view mirrors have power adjusting and folding with heated function on LSE and Onyx models.

The rear end sees new tailgate badging and the rear lights and indicators are combined in a winglet design with precise LED details.

The standard 20-inch wheels fitted to the top of the range Onyx model are based on an ice axe motif, while LSE models are fitted with 18-inch alloy wheels based upon a jet engine’s turbine blades with nine spokes.

Inside, a new Multi Information Display (MID) provides detailed easy to use menus which control most of the vehicle’s systems. The speedometer and rev counter faces feature a three-dimensional design, while the circumference chrome ring has crystal-like scale divisions reminiscent of high-end watches.

A smaller, sporty leather wrapped steering wheel and the gear selector are shaped to fit comfortably in the driver’s hands. Chrome highlights on centre console controls and door function switches add a solid look and feel to the interior.

Onyx and LSE models have a new seat design with 8-way power adjustable driver’s seat, including power lumber support adjustment in Onyx models. Top of the range models feature heated front seats and 4-way power adjustment for the passenger seat.

An improved driving position, increased range of seat height adjustment and a steering column with telescopic and tilt function makes finding a comfortable driving position easier for drivers of all sizes.

Access to the second and third row seats has been improved by moving the B-pillar forward by 25 mm allowing for a larger rear door opening.

The mu-X has legroom of 915 mm for second row occupants. The second-row seats are 30 mm wider than the seats in the outgoing model.

Roomier third row seats recline by an additional 10 degrees and all seven seating positions have seatbelt monitoring with a visual warning displayed in the driver’s instrument panel. ISOFIX points are available for up to three child seats depending on the model.

Onyx and LSE models have dual zone climate control with two separate HVAC units to provide individual temperature for each of the front seat occupants. Buttons for the air-conditioner are designed and positioned for simplified use.

The new mu-X has a new infotainment system has 9-inch or 7-inch touch screen display units depending on the model.  The system has intuitive screen functions along with steering wheel mounted controls for audio and telephone functions, including voice input. Onyx and LSE models have 8 speakers, while the LS has 6 speakers.

The mu-X offers a total 3 568 litres of luggage space available depending on the position of the seats. When all the seats are occupied, the mu-X has sizeable capacity of 311 litres which is shaped to accommodate a golf bag.

The front suspension has been redesigned with a high mounted upper control arm to minimise body roll when cornering by increasing the vehicle’s roll centre. Handling is further improved with the revision of the camber angle allowing more tyre grounding during cornering by minimising camber changes with suspension movement.

At the rear, the roll centre has been moved up closer to the vehicle’s centre of mass to reduce the vehicle’s roll angle. This minimises body roll and ensures driver confidence with stable, predictable vehicle behaviour when cornering.

The Onyx model has new 20-inch wheels with 265/50R20 tyres, 18-inch alloy wheels on the LSE model are paired with 265/60R18 tyres and LS models are equipped with a combination 17-inch alloy wheels and 255/65R17 tyres.

Ground clearance has been increased by 5 mm to 235 mm. Approach angle is 30 degrees, with a ramp angle of 24,0 degrees, and 26,0 degrees departure angle. Wading depth has increased to 800 mm.

All models are fitted with rear axle differential lock (Diff-Lock) for improved off-road performance and the new 4x4 transfer case has a new actuator which delivers one of the quickest engagement times of 0,61 seconds compared to the 1,94 seconds of the previous model.

A new feature for the 4x4 models is the “Rough Terrain Mode”, which can be engaged via a separate button on the centre console. Rough Terrain Mode increases effectiveness of the Traction Control System on loose surfaces with undulations where one or two wheels diagonally across from each other lose grip.

Power has increased to 140 kW at 3 600 r/min, while torque is now 450 Nm between 1 600 r/min and 2 600 r/min and claimed fuel consumption is 7,6 l/100 km with driving range is increased with the fitment of a larger 80 litre fuel tank, up from 65 litres.

New fuel injector design and increased fuel injection pressure are to thank for the improvement in fuel consumption and lower emissions. In addition, the fuel supply pump now uses 20% less engine power when operating.

In a first for the segment, the new Isuzu mu-X is fitted with a far side centre crash bag, which is deployed from the left-hand side of the driver’s seat. The bag is designed to prevent or reduce injuries caused by the driver and passenger smashing into each other during a collision or roll over.

The Onyx boasts a total of eight crash bags including a driver’s knee bag located below the steering column. LSE and LS models have seven crash bags with a cut-off switch for the front passenger bag.
