During the 1960’s it was believed Japanese cars did not offer the same level of quality and reliability as their western counterparts.

During that era, Europe offered the world cars such as the Jaguar E-Type and the Ferrari 250 GTO amongst others. America had the Corvette and other race-tuned models but Japan was lacking in this department.

That was until the Toyota 2000GT turned up at the 1965 Tokyo Motor Show. The model would go on to change the face of Japanese motoring and become the first Japanese car to break through the million-dollar mark at private auction.



The story of the 2000GT

Following the Second World War, Japan underwent significant changes, the country had to rebuild and many manufacturers shifted their focus to building economical cars and utility vehicles. It wasn’t until the first Japanese Grand Prix in 1963, that drivers in the country became interested in performance. Just one year later, Toyota began working on high-performance model that would showcase the company’s technology and engineering abilities.

The project was headed up by Shoichi Saito, a major contributor to the development of Toyota as a manufacturer. His brief was simple - ‘do whatever is necessary to not only produce the 2000GT but make it one of the – or perhaps even the – greatest car in the world.’



The 2000GT would need to be practical yet enjoyable to drive, the engine was to be at the front and driving the rear wheels, finally, it would need to embody a design that would rival those of the more expensive European models.

As a stroke of luck, Yamaha had approached Toyota at roughly the same time with a prototype they had designed. This prototype was originally developed for Nissan, but the rival company rejected the offer for reasons unknown.

Toyota, however, approved the design Yamaha submitted and used it to good advantage In buoying up its somewhat conservative brand image. Toyota’s designers Jiro Kawano and Satoru Nozaki took the A55X prototype and further developed it into what we know today as the 280 A1 prototype vehicle which was unveiled at the 1965 Tokyo Motor Show.

The debut remarkably took place only a year after Shoichi Saito commissioned the project. The 280 A1 was met with great excitement and intrigue, however, buyers would have to wait until 1967 to get their hands on the production version of this new sports car.

The Production Model

The production version of the 2000GT offers a smooth flowing body which was crafted out of aluminium. It was also the first Japanese car to be fitted with a limited-slip differential and all-round power-assisted disk brakes in standard specification. The 2.0-litre straight-six engine (with Its DOHC aluminium head) was developed by Toyota, but subtly fettled by Yamaha.



The result transcribed to 110 kW and 175 Nm, enough to get the grand tourer from 0-100km/h in 10 seconds and a top speed of 215km/h. Although the performance of the 2000GT was impressive considering its power output, the Toyota struggled to compete with the likes of the Jaguar E-Type and American Corvettes. However, it didn’t fail to impress media the world over.

Road & Track magazine stated that the 2000GT was one of the most exciting cars that they had ever driven and even compared it to the then Porsche 911. The 2000GT also achieved success on the racetrack as it won the 1967 Fuji 24-hour race. It also managed to set several FIA world records for speed and endurance in a 72-hour endurance test.



In the United States, Carol Shelby himself entered a pair of modified 2000GT vehicles into the 1968 SCCA production car series. Despite these achievements, the 2000GT’s most famous moment came when it appeared in the 1967 James Bond movie ‘You only live twice’. Due to Sean Connery’s size and the relatively small cabin, two convertible versions of the 2000GT were specially commission for the film. Toyota simply chopped off the roof and replaced it with a soft top unit.

The 2000GT’s main rival, the Nissan 240Z, only arrived in 1969. Incorporating somewhat similar styling to the Toyota, Nissan’s 240Z focused more on outright performance while sacrificing luxury. After three short years of production, the last 2000GT left the factory in 1970 which completed the total build cycle of just 351 cars.

The 2000GT changed how the world viewed Japanese cars and it went on to influence the design of some of Toyotas iconic sports cars such as the Supra, the GT86 and even the Lexus LFA. Produced in such limited numbers, the 2000GT is widely considered to be the ultimate Japanese classic - which is reflected in auctions around the world. Pristine examples are fetching anywhere between R20- and R40-million Rand at these prestigious events.

The Three

Out of all the 351 examples of the 2000GT models produced, only three were designated for South Africa. Chassis number MF10-10131 and MF10-10206 in Pegasus White and MF10 10207 finished in Thunder Silver. The three vehicles arrived on South African shores between 1967 and 1968.



Toyota Motors South Africa have been in possession of one of these examples for many years, the car in question being chassis number MF10-10207. The vehicle forms part of the company’s private collection which comprises rare racing vehicles and other Toyota and Lexus models. In July of 2020, Toyota Gazoo Racing announced that it would be reproducing replacement parts for the Toyota 2000GT as part of the GR Heritage Parts Project, and sell them both domestically and overseas.

This initiative paved the way to a decision made by Toyota South Africa to do a full bumper-to-bumper restoration of its 2000GT. One of the biggest mysteries, however, is the colour. Various historical sources indicate that the car was originally finished in Thunder Silver, however, the earliest recollections of this vehicle are that it was painted white despite its current hue which is Solar Red.

Red

Those who were lucky enough to acquire the 2000 GT had the choice of six different colours to choose from. These included Atlantis Green, Bellatrix Yellow, Pegasus White, Twilight Turquoise, Solar Red and Thunder Silver. The latter being of importance to this story…

Trying to restore a rare classic car is a daunting task on its own, but trying to do that same restoration during a global pandemic brings a host of challenges. Thankfully, all those involved in this project have shown Incredible passion and dedication, despite the obstacles. The 2000GT was split (body from chassis) and both were prepped and sent to Dino’s Auto Body for a complete refurbishment, which saw dents being fixed, panels re-aligned and finally, a new layer of paint applied.



Dino’s Auto Body was founded in 2006, its founders having decades of combined industry experience. While the company specialises in a variety of repair work on many modern vehicles, it also has a classic vehicle and restorations department. Dino's Classic Restorations has refurbished a host of classic vehicles over the years, a walk around the workshop floor reaffirms their reputation. 

Ironically amongst the plethora of classic vehicles being restored, features a Jaguar E-Type which at the time was the 2000 GT’s main European competitor on and off the track.

Despite Dino’s experience on classic vehicles, like many involved in this project, they had never seen, let alone worked on a Toyota 2000GT before. The years had taken their toll on this particular example. The paint was clearly in need of work as many scratches, touch-ups and dents littered the body. 

The sump cover panel and lower valance had been somewhat deformed over the years of bumping into pavements or speed humps. Before any paint could be applied, the complete removal of all surface material was needed to establish what work needed to be done.

Once the paint had been stripped from the aluminium body, it was discovered that some repair work was needed in key areas. Lead needed to be heated and applied to the affected area, where it could be smoothed out after it had cooled and hardened. This specialist procedure was carried out by the team in various places on the 2000 GT.

Once the paint stripping and repair work was completed, the vehicle was ready for paint. However, the aforementioned question of colour reared its head at this point. According to records, this specific 2000 GT, chassis number MF10-10207 left the factory in Thunder Silver.

As to exactly when it transitioned to Solar Red remains a mystery - that said, it was clearly a comprehensive respray back in the day as crimson paint can be found behind the dashboard, under the carpets and under the headliner.

While many spray-painters will focus on areas that can be seen, very few focus on these hidden areas. This led the team to believe that the car was fully stripped of its original coat and at some point fully re-sprayed. However, with just over 30 000km on the odometer, the reason for this remains unanswered.

With the clock ticking and a decision needing to be made, Toyota South Africa’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Leon Theron made the call that this 2000GT will remain red. While some experts believe that the car should have gone back to its original colour to retain its ever-growing market value, the fact of the matter is that this 2000 GT has a local story, a uniquely South African one.

Dino's Classic Restorations was able to match the original Solar Red paint mixture (with some assistance from a US-based 2000GT expert, Maine Line Exotics), which was applied to some of the models back in 1967. The body of this 2000GT was prepped and the paint was applied with the utmost care. Applying a new coat of paint to a 2000GT can easily be considered as a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence for the restoration shop and its employees.

The paint has a perfect gloss to it, it’s deep, rich and without blemish while the little louvered sump cover and lower valance look as good as new. A distinguishing feature of the Solar red models are the gunmetal mirror housings, whereas this 2000GT had chrome mirror caps to match its original silver paintwork. In order to preserve the authenticity of the red car, the team made the decision to apply the gunmetal paint effect - adding another unique attribute.

Old School

The team that headed up the project is father-and-son duo, Wynand Strydom Sr and Wynand Strydom Jr from Generation Old School Benoni. Their repertoire ranges from Concourse class-winning Beetles and Microbuses, to American muscle cars such as Mustangs and Chargers.



Although neither of them had ever seen a Toyota 2000GT in the metal before, much less have one in their shop, they were more than qualified to take on the job. Both are well versed in disassembling a vehicle and documenting each step - a key function in classic car restoration. Years of experience also prepared them for the task of researching each and every component before commencing restoration.

The team behind the restoration, believes in the revival of parts, rather than just replacing them. This not only preserves the value of the vehicle but the originality as well. Thankfully, Toyota South Africa provided Generation Old School with detailed literature pertaining to the 2000GT, which is a rather large book detailing every single process to disassemble the car and every part number.



It wasn’t long after the car arrived at Generation Old School that work began on dismantling the icon. Wynand Jr, who took the lead on the restoration, says that it has been a learning curve for everyone involved. Every nut and bolt had to be removed with care - as one might not be able to replace it.

The body was separated from the chassis, which in itself was a rather special moment. Now, nearly 53 years after the marriage of the body and chassis, the two were once again apart.

As for the chassis itself, Wynand Jr confirmed that the overall condition of key components was still in good condition, with only minimum renewal work needed. There were, however, other components that needed to be completely refurbished or replaced. Four such items were the magnesium alloy wheels - which needed special paint preparation and paint to restore them to their original colour.

The original wheel design also incorporates spindle 'knock-on' locks, which were badly beaten up from years of use. Here the Generation Old School team carefully refurbished the original items and created a special tool to assist with the removal and refitting of the wheels - without damaging any of the parts. 

One of the last pieces of the puzzle was the windscreen, with international suppliers quoting astronomical figures with no assurance that the part would arrive in tact, the Generation Old School team seeked out a local glass manufacturer who built a bespoke mould and proceeded with no less than six attempts in order to perfect the shape and fitment - the sixth and final one calling the 2000GT home.  



On the interior front, the intricacies of the facia made it stressful to remove items in the hopes that none break. The wood trim for example (which covers the entire centre console), was brittle and faded and is also extremely thin.

The chrome detailing cannot be bent when being removed and many of the wires were crumbling at the slightest touch. The wooden steering wheel in particular had a sizeable 'splinter', which had to be carefully restored to maintain its structural Integrity. 

The original stereo system was disassembled by a veteran radio repairman, who took on the task of rebuilding the '60's-vintage electronics and making them functional once more. An interesting fact uncovered during this process was that the Toyota engineers equipped the audio system with a sound- fade during the retractable antennae operation.

The fact that the car is incredibly compact makes it even more difficult to work on and Wynand Jr has reported numerous bumps on his head because of it. All the individual components were placed into small plastic bags, labelled and safely stored before it was refurbished.

The Engine

Beneath the bonnet of the Toyota 2000 GT lurks a 2.0-litre, straight-six petrol with a double-overhead camshaft configuration. When new, this 3M, or in this particular case, 3M-10256 engine would have produced 110 kW and 175 Nm of torque. 

The engine is coupled to a 5-speed manual transmission and was claimed to be capable of reaching 217 km/h. To put this in context, a contemporary Corolla Sprinter merely produced 38 kW and 85 Nm.



Thus the 2000 GT was a great leap forward for the brand. But after years of storage and exposure to the elements, the 3M-10256 wasn’t in a good shape. Most of the rubber components in the engine bay were cracking and would leak fluids with the majority of the coolant pathways around the engine being clogged with rust and build-up.

As such the motor was completely stripped and a rebuild commenced. This process entailed matching up sizes and sourcing components from other engines, creating bespoke engineered bits and some 'old-school' mechanics to restore the original engine. This painstaking task was completed by Wessels Motors in Kempton Park; the smooth running engine providing testament to the time and effort invested by them.

For the rebuild, most of the original components were cleaned up and made it back into the motor. However, items such as sprockets and bearings were replaced to ensure optimal running and, of course, new gaskets were made for the reassembly. What's more, is that a brand new bracket was designed and fabricated for the age-appropriate, aftermarket air-conditioning compressor that is mounted to the side of the motor. 

On the intake side of the engine, one very quickly notices the three 2-barrel Mikuni-Solex 40 PHH Type Q carburettors. These three carburettors were stripped down and cleaned, serviced with new seals and gaskets and finally retuned for the best performance. 

Lastly, the valve cover was given a new coat of black paint and contrasting red ignition cables were fitted to give the engine that extra touch of character.

Members of the public will finally be allowed to see the historic collection of cars and other historical artefacts that form part of The Heritage Hub – the combine history of Fiat, Lancia and Abarth.

Made possible by the collaboration between the Stellantis Heritage department, the Municipality of Turin and the Museo Nazionale dell’Automobile (the Italian national motor museum), access is via Gate 31 to the Mirafiori industrial complex – located at Via Plava 80, Turin.



The space will host two guided tours per day, one in the morning and another in the afternoon, each lasting around two hours. The site will be open on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays with tickets available online from the MAUTO website.

Brands

The Stellantis Group Heritage Hub is an exhibition space covering about 15 000 m2, ‘home’ of the historical collection of automotive brands from Turin: Abarth, Fiat and Lancia.

To highlight the link between the city and the motor vehicle industry, the former Officina 81 at Mirafiori was selected as its site. Open since 1968, it was an active centre of production for over 30 years, focusing on mechanical components. The space has undergone a meticulous restoration to safeguard its industrial spirit, maintaining the raw concrete floor and the original colour scheme of its time.

The middle of the exhibition space features 64 classic cars, split into eight themed areas:

- Records and Races, protagonists that triumphed on the main circuits;

- Concepts and Customisations, very rare cars, and extraordinary one-offs;

- Archistars, models that revolutionised the architecture of the car, while respecting the principles of productivity and functionality;

- Eco and Sustainable, bringing together cars that stood out for their environmental credentials;

- Small and Safe, models that combined safety and limited dimensions;

- Style Marks, cars that made design history;

- Epic Journeys, vehicles that featured in unforgettable journeys;

- The Rally Era, the milestones of the golden age of road and dirt racing.



The remainder of the collection is displayed within the two long sides of the building, divided by brand, and set out in chronological order. As well as Fiat and Lancia cars, selected models from the Alfa Romeo, Autobianchi and Jeep brands are also on display.

Vintage

There is no shortage of special features, shown by 16 vintage Fiat cars belonging to the Carabinieri police force. From the 600 Multipla to the Panda, via 1100 and Campagnola models, the Carabinieri selection covers a time span of almost half a century, highlighting the deep roots of a collaboration that remains active to this day.

The exhibition space at the entrance to the pavilion, hosts a permanent display on the history of Mirafiori from 1939 to date.  As confirmation of its multifunctionality, the space also includes an area designed for workshops and another for conferences, with capacity for up to 200 people.

Meeting

The ‘engines area’ is an ideal setting for a meeting space, hosting two long benches featuring a selection of over 30 of the most important engines, designed and manufactured by the Group's Italian brands.

True milestones in the history of Italian engines such as the four-cylinder from the ‘100 series’ – which debuted in 1955 in the Fiat 600 and was then used, in its various evolutions, for around 50 years – contrast with pilot projects for electric motors, turbines and even steam engines.

Porsche Design is celebrating its 50th anniversary – a golden jubilee indeed – and is doing so by creating a special design for the 911 Edition 50Y and restoring a 911 S 2.4 Targa from its founding year of 1972.

What unites them is the colour scheme, which, in recalling the legendary Chronograph I designed by Professor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche in 1972, sees both the exterior and the interior dominated by the colour black.



Alongside them, Porsche Design is also presenting the Chronograph 1 – 1972 Limited Edition.

“When you rethink the function of something, the form sometimes emerges as if by itself” – this was how FA Porsche described what still drives the engineers and designers at Porsche Design today. In 1972, he founded Porsche Design with his brother Hans-Peter.

Exclusive
The 911 Edition 50Y Porsche Design is based on the 911 Targa 4 GTS with its six-cylinder boxer engine delivering 353 kW. Strictly limited to 750 cars, it comes with numerous features inspired by the iconic designs of FA Porsche.

In addition to the all-black exterior, the nods to the past include the classic checked Sport-Tex seat centre panels and the red second hand of the Porsche Design Subsecond clock in the Sport Chrono Package, which comes as standard.

Buyers can also purchase a special version of the legendary Chronograph I. Features such as the edition number and wheel-shaped winding rotor underline the connection to the 911 Edition 50Y Porsche Design.



“The vision was to produce a historical counterpart to the new 911 Edition 50Y Porsche Design,” explains Ulrike Lutz, Head of Porsche Classic. “With the aid of the new Sonderwunsch (special wishes) programme, we were able to implement the idea of a unique pair of vehicles. The job of the designers and works restorers was to carefully transfer the specifications of the new car to the classic.”

The base vehicle, a 911 T 2.4 Targa from 1972, was in a poor condition and was missing some parts. The Porsche Classic experts completely upgraded the engine and chassis to the spec of the S-version. As the top-of-the-range model in its day, it had a displacement of 2 341 cc, which generated 169 kW at 6 500 r/min, and was equipped with mechanical fuel injection.

In tribute to Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, this one-of-a-kind vehicle features the same colours as the legendary Chronograph I watch that he designed in 1972, with black dominating both the exterior and interior. Classic side stripes with a Platinum satin finish and integrated Porsche Design lettering adorn the flanks.

 As a special highlight, the Targa roll bar has also been lasered in a Platinum satin finish – a new interpretation of the brushed stainless steel of the original classic model. The Targa lettering is finished in matt black.



Like the special edition model, the grille on the rear engine cover features a ‘Porsche Design 50th Anniversary’ badge with a reproduction of FA Porsche's signature.

For all Porsche and watch fans, Porsche Design is presenting the Chronograph 1 – 1972 Limited Edition with a historical logo and lettering.

Based on the original and limited to 500 examples, it is available in the usual way from Porsche Design. Limited Capsule Collections in the fashion, shoes, sportswear, luggage and accessories ranges, as well as special eyewear collections complete the anniversary offer.

The new Range Rover – only available locally from mid-2022 – has been launched in Europe and the words ‘everything but the kitchen sink’ tell an apt tale of the levels of tech and luxury that are incorporated in the latest iteration.  

With a suite of powertrain options – and a pure-electric Range Rover set to join the line-up in 2024 – plus a choice of four, five or seven-seat interiors available across Standard and Long Wheelbase body designs, the New Range Rover is at home in any environment.

Thierry Bolloré, Chief Executive Officer, Jaguar Land Rover, says: “The New Range Rover is a superb manifestation of our vision to create the world’s most desirable luxury vehicles, for the most discerning of customers. It writes the next chapter in the unique story of pioneering innovation that has been a Range Rover hallmark for more than 50 years.”



Land Rover’s new flexible Modular Longitudinal Architecture, MLA-Flex, underpins every aspect of this luxury SUV that will be available in South Africa in a choice of HSE and Autobiography models.

A First Edition will be available throughout the first year of production, based on the Autobiography and featuring a unique specification. It is exclusively available in a Sunset Gold Satin finish, among a choice of five exterior colours. Both Standard (SWB) or Long Wheelbase (LWB) body designs are available with five seats, while the New Range Rover LWB model is available with a third row for extended comfort for up to seven adults.

The surfaces provide a clean and contemporary appearance – and contribute to a drag coefficient of 0,30, making this possibly the most aerodynamically efficient luxury SUV in the world.

The luxurious interior is underpinned by modern, intuitive and relevant technologies, designed to work harmoniously with the finest materials and wellbeing innovations to create a calm sanctuary for all occupants – turning every trip into an experience to savour.

Nick Collins, Executive Director Vehicle Programmes, Jaguar Land Rover, says: “The New Range Rover takes the lessons learned over 50 years of evolution and combines them with cutting edge technologies to deliver supreme refinement, comfort and wellbeing. It does this through pre-emptive suspension that primes the vehicle for upcoming corners, next-generation noise cancelling with new headrest speakers and clean air technology that can help significantly reduce odours and viruses – creating one of the quietest, most relaxing, modern luxury travelling experiences imaginable.”

The Range Rover was the first luxury SUV to feature Electronic Air Suspension, in 1992, and the New Range Rover continues this pioneering approach with Dynamic Response Pro and pre-emptive suspension that uses eHorizon Navigation data to read the road ahead and prime the suspension to provide perfect responses.

The intelligent technology also works in conjunction with the Adaptive Cruise Control with Steering Assist to smooth out body movements resulting from sudden changes in speed. Fully independent suspension underpins the luxurious ride and features Land Rover’s first ever five-link rear axle, which isolates the cabin from surface imperfections more effectively than ever using advanced air springs.

Advanced hazard detection means the doors can automatically pause until the sweep of the door is cleared.



Drivers can even control the new Range Rover from outside the vehicle using Remote Park Assist, which is operated using a smartphone app. It allows the luxury SUV to manoeuvre into and out of parking spaces while the driver monitors progress nearby – perfect for entering or leaving narrow city spaces or negotiating rural gates.

Every New Range Rover features All-Wheel Steering for an effortless drive with heightened high-speed stability and improved manoeuvrability at low speeds.

The electrically operated rear axle provides up to seven degrees of steering angle and, at low speeds, turns out-of-phase of the front wheels, giving the New Range Rover a turning circle of less than 11 m– the smallest of any Land Rover. At higher speeds the rear axle turns in phase with the front wheels for enhanced stability and comfort.

The New Range Rover is also the first Land Rover to feature Dynamic Response Pro. The powerful new active 48-volt electronic roll control system is faster-acting and more efficient than a hydraulic set-up, with a torque capacity of up to 1 400 Nm fed into the anti-roll bars to keep body movements under control.

The intelligent All-Wheel Drive (iAWD) transmission is controlled by Land Rover’s Intelligent Driveline Dynamics (IDD) system, which monitors grip levels and driver inputs 100 times a second to predictively distribute torque between the front and rear axles, and across the rear axle, for optimum traction on and off-road.



In South Africa the New Range Rover will be available in a choice of new Extended Range Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) powertrains, the P440e and P510e, and the Ingenium diesel D350 engine. A powerful new petrol flagship – the P530 Twin Turbo V8 – delivers increased refinement and performance and is 17% more efficient than the previous Range Rover V8.

The New Range Rover is the first Land Rover to be powered by a new 4,4-litre V8 engine, which deploys two parallel twin-scroll turbos – one for each cylinder bank – to minimise turbo lag and optimise efficiency.

The new engine produces 390 kW and 750 Nm of torque, and powers the New Range Rover from 0-100 km/h in 4,6 s with Dynamic Launch engaged, and to a top speed of 250 km/h.

The D350 diesel produces 257 kW and 700 Nm of torque, and powers New Range Rover from 0-100 km/h in 6,1s.

The new Extended-Range PHEVs combine the in-line six-cylinder Ingenium petrol engine, in a choice of 323 kW or 375 kW outputs, with a 38,2 kWh lithium-ion battery – with usable capacity of 31,8 kWh – and a 105 kW electric motor integrated with the transmission. Together, the powertrain provides up to 100 km of near-silent pure-electric driving. With instantaneous electric torque the new P510e (375 kW) accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 5,6s.

The PHEVs can reach up to 140 km/h allowing customers to enjoy the New Range Rover as an EV-only model for most journeys in town and country, with overall CO2 emissions lower than 30 g/km9. Typical Range Rover customers will be able to complete up to 75% of trips using electric power onlyif they begin each journey with a full charge.

The New Range Rover will be produced exclusively at the Solihull Manufacturing Facility in the UK, using a state-of-the-art production line housed in the building used to produce early Series Land Rovers. The quirky Fiat Abarth hatch has gained a special edition model while the rest of the 595 range features new interiors, new colours and new details for the Abarth 595 Turismo and Competizione hatch and cabriolet models.

The Abarth 595 offers as standard all the equipment needed, including a flat-bottomed steering wheel, updated instrument panel and the pressure gauge now lit in white to ensure better legibility, while polyelliptical headlights and LED daytime running lights are fitted as standard on the Competizione.

‘Sport’ mode has been renamed ‘Scorpion’ mode throughout the new range aligning it with the Abarth logo and in recognition of the brand’s founder, Carlo Abarth.

Pressing the button on the dashboard alters peak torque delivery, power steering calibration and engine response to the accelerator pedal, making them sharper and increasing driver engagement. The 595 is also equipped with a high-performance braking system specific to Abarth, providing maximum safety courtesy of the 284 mm front ventilated discs and the 240 mm rear discs.

The Abarth 595 Turismo features refreshed interiors, including exclusive diamond-embossed leather seats available in a number of colour options, including the new heritage brown.

As part of the upgrade an all new colour has been added to the exterior Competizione palette, rally blue, a matt colour inspired by the Fiat 131 Abarth Rally of the 1970s. New 17-inch alloy wheels are a nod to those of the 1990s Lancia Delta Rally Integrale, while a body colour body kit is specific to the Competizione in combination with the new rally blue or scorpione black exterior paint.

Inside, in addition to the ‘Scorpion’ mode selector with its new design, a new dashboard covered in Alcantara can be found, alongside new leather seats and gear lever in carbon fibre.




The new Abarth 595 range is equipped with the 1.4 T-jet engine, available in two output levels. The 595 Turismo features 121 kW, while the 595 Competizione enjoys a power rise to 132 kW.

All variants of the 1.4 T-jet engine are paired with a six-speed manual transmission and both the Turismo and Competizione can be fitted on request with an Abarth robotised sequential transmission with shift paddles.

The new 595 range is equipped as standard with the Uconnect system with 7-inch high-definition touchscreen radio and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.




The new Abarth 595 Monster Energy Yamaha special series is designed especially for young customers and motor sport fans and is limited to 2 000 units worldwide.

Aesthetically inspired by the livery of the 2020 Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP’s YZR-M1, the exterior of the new special series features a dual colour blue and black livery bearing the ‘Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP’ logo on its lower side, just above the ‘595’ logo.

The special series is finished off with the Monster ‘claw’ on the bonnet.

On the inside, the model features the special new Abarth sports seats with blue finishes and the ‘Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP’ logo on the head restraints. The blue lining stands out from the black dashboard. Thus mirroring the dual colour livery, while the numbered plate is placed on the central tunnel.

The Abarth 595 Monster Energy Yamaha is equipped with a 1.4 T-jet engine with Euro6B homologation, with manual transmission, but it can be fitted with an Abarth robotised sequential transmission with shift paddles on demand.

 The other side of Lamborghini

Besides being the ride of choice for several local competitors in the GT Racing series and the creator of some of the world’s most achingly beautiful cars, Automobili Lamborghini has several records and innovations attached to its name. Here are seven that you might not have known about: 

  1. Lamborghini is the only automaker to win the 24 Hours of Daytona in the GTD class three consecutive times

For many years, Lamborghini cars have raced successfully in the most prestigious international championships dedicated to GT3 cars. Automobili Lamborghini’s pre-eminence as an automaker is demonstrated by victories at the 24 Hours of Daytona in 2018, 2019 and 2020. The House of Sant’Agata Bolognese is the world’s only car manufacturer to win the prestigious American endurance race for three years in a row. Moreover, Lamborghini is the only manufacturer to have two consecutive wins, in 2018 and 2019, in both the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring, races that together form the legendary ‘36 Hours of Florida’.


 

  2. Urus speed record on the ice of Russia’s Lake Baikal during the ‘Days of Speed’

In March 2021, with a top speed of 298 km/h and average speed from a standing start of 114 km/h over 1000 meters, Lamborghini’s Super SUV achieved the speed record on the ice of Lake Baikal in Russia during the ‘Days of Speed’, a record officially endorsed by the RAF (Russian Automobile Federation) recognized by the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile). The Lamborghini Urus, driven by Andrey Leontyev, who holds 18 records, demonstrated extraordinary performance and exceptional handling despite reduced traction due to the ice and the strong wind gusts.


 

  3. Urus, the first SUV with wheels up to 23-inches

Since its debut, the Lamborghini Urus Super SUV has created a new segment in the luxury car market and set a benchmark in terms of power, performance, driving dynamics, design, luxury, and everyday usability. The wheels, available from 21-inch to 23-inch, are a maximum size that no other vehicle in the same segment had ever offered before.

 


  4. Record for organ transport by car: 489 km in just over 2 hours to transport an organ at 233 km/h

In December 2020, the Huracán Polizia was used for the urgent transport of a kidney destined for transplant. In this specific case, the kidney was picked up and transported from Padua to the Gemelli University Hospital in Rome. 

The 489-kilometer journey was covered by the men in uniform in just over two hours, at an average speed of 233 km/h. It was an incredible result if we consider that in normal driving conditions it would take about five hours to complete a journey of this distance, and this extraordinary performance takes on especially important value in relation to the nobility of the mission accomplished. 

The Huracán Polizia, part of the fleet of the Italian Highway Patrol since 2017, is used for carrying out patrol, rescue and medical transport services. The car is painted in the official colours (Medium Blue Police) with the parts in white and the lettering adapted to the dynamic design of the super sports car. The livery is completed by a tricolour band that runs along both sides of the car. The primary task of the Huracán Polizia is medical assistance. For this purpose, the front luggage compartment houses special refrigerated equipment for the urgent transport of organs for transplantation. For emergency rescue of people, the equipment also includes a defibrillator.


 

  5. Automobili Lamborghini, the first automaker to introduce a comprehensive control system integrated with Amazon Alexa

In early 2021, Automobili Lamborghini became the first automaker to integrate Amazon Alexa for comprehensive in-car control of the vehicle. Amazon Alexa Integration joins Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Web Radio on the Huracán MY21 models equipped with the ‘Smartphone Interface and Connected Services’ option. In the Huracán EVO, drivers can adjust functions such as climate control, ambient light and seat heating, as well as control navigation, telephone calls and entertainment with just a simple ‘Alexa’ voice command, so the driver can remain focused on the road. Alexa is also integrated into the LDVI (Lamborghini Integrated Vehicle Dynamics) system in the four-wheel drive Huracán EVO. A simple voice command accesses real-time feedback on the car’s driving dynamics via the LIS screen, such as torque vectoring, Lamborghini Dynamic Steering (LDS) and traction control. The Alexa function also allows connection with other Alexa-enabled devices.

 


  6. Lamborghini, the first CO2-neutral automotive company certified by DNV since 2015

Lamborghini pursues a precise environmental sustainability strategy, a program called ‘Direzione Cor Tauri’, inspired by a vision holistic of the company’s approach to sustainability. It is a comprehensive approach that embraces not only the product but also the Sant’Agata Bolognese site, the production lines and the offices. The total area of 160,000 square meters has been certified CO2 neutral since 2015, an accomplishment that was maintained also following the doubling of the production site in recent years.

 

  7. Automobili Lamborghini, the world’s first automaker to initiate research on carbon fibre materials in outer space

Automobili Lamborghini is the first automaker in the world to carry out research on carbon fibre materials aboard the International Space Station (ISS). The launch of the Northrop Grumman Antares launcher from the Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia took place on November 2, 2019, with the mission to take a series of composite material samples produced by Automobili Lamborghini to the ISS. The launch is part of a test campaign sponsored by the ISS U.S. National Laboratory and overseen by the Houston Methodist Research Institute. The tests were aimed at analysing the response of five different composite materials produced by Lamborghini to the extreme stresses generated by the space environment, in view of future applications on cars made by the House of Sant’Agata Bolognese and in the medical field.

 Morgan heads for the hills

Morgan, the British carmaker renowned for its quirky, bespoke hand-built sports cars, has made a leap back in time to the off road arena with the very limited Plus Four CX-T. 

Just eight vehicles will be built, priced at £170,000 (R3,4-million) and supplied in full overland specification, with each customer having the opportunity to work alongside Morgan’s design team to specify their own CX-T.


The Morgan Plus Four CX-T is inspired by Morgan’s history of competing in all-terrain endurance trials. As early as 1911, Morgan sports cars were competing and winning in trials competitions. The more adventurous journeys that are frequently undertaken by Morgan customers all over the world have further fuelled the desire for Morgan to imagine the Plus Four CX-T. 

Following the launch of the Plus Four in 2020, Morgan partnered with Rally Raid UK, creator of Dakar race cars, to jointly design and engineer the Plus Four CX-T. One of the aims of the project is to demonstrate the capability and durability of Morgan’s new CX-Generation platform, along with the Plus Four upon which the CX-T is based. 

Every Plus Four CX-T is built at Morgan’s factory in Malvern, Worcestershire, before undergoing the final preparation and setup at Rally Raid UK’s own workshop facilities. Morgan’s design and engineering team have worked alongside Rally Raid UK throughout the programme to define the concept, specification, technical attributes, and aesthetic of the model.


The exterior of the Plus Four CX-T is designed to maximise luggage and equipment carrying capacity and provide the occupant protection necessary for extreme environments. 

Most prominently, the rear panel of the vehicle has been replaced with an equipment rack, with side body panels designed to be reminiscent of the classic four-seater Morgan. 

The rack houses two ruggediand waterproof Pelican luggage cases, a Zarges aluminium tool/storage box, two Rotopax 11-litre containers and two spare wheel/tyre assemblies. Additionally, for those who venture further off the beaten track, recovery equipment is mounted on the exterior of the car within easy reach when required. 

The external protective exoskeleton can also be adapted to carry leisure equipment such as bikes and surf boards, to compliment the lifestyle activities of the owner, while the removable side screens can be mounted onto the roof of the vehicle, allowing them to be carried unobtrusively in case of a change in weather conditions. 

The suspension has been designed to be expedition ready: tough and fit for purpose. Durability and a drive-over obstacle clearance of 230 mm, has been achieved using modified Plus Six wishbones. These widen the track and allow for the extra arc of movement required to achieve the desired suspension performance. The wheel arch apertures have also been modified, allowing the suspension to compress deep into the wheel well, providing maximum traction and stability. 

In addition to the main suspension hardware, the lower suspension arms contain bespoke bushes which further increase durability. 

A five-piece underbody protection system – comprising an engine guard, rear chassis guard, mid-section shield and rear undertray – helps to protect the chassis and important components from damage when driving in extreme conditions. The car is also fitted with a full bespoke exhaust system with rear side-exit that improves the departure angle and contributes to 230 mm of ground clearance. 

The Plus Four CX-T uses a BMW X-Drive electronic differential with bespoke software, calibrated and tested specifically for the application. Switches inside the cabin allow a choice of three modes to be selected depending upon the driving conditions; each mode varies the degree of differential lock that is applied.


Selecting ‘Road’ mode fully opens the differential, while ‘All-Terrain’ mode applies approximately 45% lock to the rear differential, allowing some variation torque distribution between the rear wheels. ‘All-Terrain – Extreme’ mode fully locks the rear differential, providing equal torque to both rear wheels. 

Inside the cabin of the Plus Four CX-T features have been added to improve occupant comfort and usability in remote environments. A RAM mount track is built into to the dashboard to allow the secure fixing of a variety of devices such as phones or cameras. A flexible map light, pencil and notebook holder have also been integrated, all designed to withstand operation in harsh driving environments.


Cabin stowage has also been optimised with the addition of a removable map/document holder and insulated cool bag, both located in the passenger footwell. A custom-made first aid kit is mounted to the internal roll cage behind the seats. 

The Morgan Plus Four CX-T is the second of two special projects being produced by Morgan in 2021, with the first being the Plus 8 GTR. The introduction of the Plus Four CX-T also coincides with the announcement of Model Year 22 updates to the Plus Four and Plus Six, and helps to inform technical and aesthetic advancements for Morgan’s current and future range of vehicles. The Plus Four CX-T is on sale immediately, with all vehicles due to be built before the end of 2021.

Road Review Mercedes-Benz GLE 63 S Coupé 

This car is legally insane!

 This car is the Mercedes-Benz GLE 63 S Coupé kitted with an AMG 4,0-litre V8 biturbo engine whacking out 450 kW and 850 Nm. 

Impressive numbers indeed. However, the numbers themselves do not mean that much despite much beer-fuelled banter around the braai fire. Consider a race car with similar numbers that offers them up only in small band between, say 6 000 r/min and 9 000 r/min. 

Not ideal for negotiating the morning traffic. What makes the numbers significant is how they are delivered and the GLE releases maximum torque from 2 250 r/min with peak power around 5 750 r/min – mean it is not only blisteringly fast but gives and keeps on giving. 

In fact, on the private landing strip used during my test I ran out of road before the GLE ran out of breath. 

Acceleration from 0-100 km/h comes up in 3,9 seconds!


For the first time, the new GLE 63’s 4,0-litre V8 biturbo engine is fitted with an integrated EQ Boost starter-alternator that combines a starter motor and an alternator in a single, powerful electric motor. It provides an additional 16 kW of output and 250 Nm of torque which can be called upon temporarily and also supplies the 48-volt on-board electrical system to use as a power generator and perform hybrid functions. These include boost, recuperate, load point shift, gliding and the virtually imperceptible restarting of the engine with the start/stop function.  

Power is regulated through a 9-speed transmission, which features extremely short shift times and fast multiple downshifts, and delivers an especially emotive gear shifting experience thanks to the double-declutching function. 


For increased efficiency, Mercedes-AMG has also equipped the V8 engines with cylinder shut-off. In the partial-load range, cylinders two, three, five and eight are deactivated, which crucially reduces fuel consumption. When the driver has selected the Comfort drive program, the cylinder deactivation system is available from 1 000 r/min to 3 250 r/min. The transition between these two operating states is so smooth and immediate passengers will scarcely feel it. 

And, herein is the conundrum. The ‘G’ portion of the nomenclature signifies a car with off road capability but, why would anyone want to take this high-rise on steroids off-road? 

Perhaps it is just the ‘old school’ in me but, when I’m nudging over the 200 km/h mark, I like my butt to be mere millimetres from the ground. Talking of that 200 number, from that speed the GLE picks up some buffeting from its own wind both smashing a hole in the air ahead of the car and from the vacuum effect created at the rear. 

It is not hugely significant, rather a touch disconcerting.


Perhaps, even surprisingly, the GLE handles rather well for what it is and will take on tight corners with minimal body roll and even less feeling of wanting to come unglued from the road, even with its 2 445-kilogram mass. 

Being a 4Matic all-wheel drive, it will plough on at initial turn-in but quickly steady and follow steering directions precisely. 

In ‘Race’ mode all bets are off though and ill-considered entry into corners will produce some lurid moments as the ‘nanny’ systems cease to provide assistance to the driver. 

For daily driving and standard use set in ‘Comfort’ mode, the best is tamed and remains absolutely gentle, just the choogling boogies of the V8 a delicious reminder of what lurks within. In this frame of mind, fuel consumption is around 12,9 l/100 km. 

The exterior design of the AMG GLE is muscular and distinctive, with specific radiator grilles with vertical louvres affirming its membership of the AMG model family. The side skirts, exterior mirror housings and flared wheel arches are painted in the vehicle colour and seamlessly blend into the overall look. 

I mulled over the look for a long time and could not get away from the side view appearing a bit like one of compacted cartoon drawings of a car. It is a big vehicle, yet the proportions just did not seem right to me – perhaps just missing that elongated bonnet of the sedan. 

Also, unless you are a tallish driver with the seat position set low, the more vertically challenged (like me) with a higher seat position tend to fall foul of the rake coupé shape, clocking the head on the door frame getting in and out. 

Once inside, it is more spacious than it might convey from the outside, although tall people in the rear seats may be compromised by the sharply dropping roofline.

 

AMG-specific interior appointments and controls lend the cockpit a hallmark AMG atmosphere and the latest generation, three-spoke AMG Performance steering wheel with aluminium shift paddles looks the business. 

AMG seats are upholstered in Nappa Leather, as a standard and individually adjustable ambient lighting also comes as standard, while the second seat row is optionally available with full electric adjustment. 

The vehicle functions are directly visualised on the instrument cluster on the left side and on the touchscreen display on the right, and visually blend into a Widescreen Cockpit. The centre console has an AMG-specific control panel with additional switches with which the 3-stage ESP, manual transmission mode, the adaptive damping adjustment, the optional AMG Performance exhaust system and the suspension level can be controlled.  

Through the voice control – activated with the phrase ‘Hey Mercedes’ – the AI software recognises and understands practically all commands common in infotainment and vehicle control.  

The standard AMG RIDE CONTROL+ air suspension and the adaptively adjustable ADS+ (Adaptive Damping System) can be preselected in three stages - Comfort, Sport and Sport+, allowing a much more obvious distinction between high long-distance comfort and sporty vehicle dynamics.  

Thanks to pneumatic self-levelling, the GLE maintains a constant ride height regardless of the vehicle load. This can be adjusted depending on the driving mode, or manually using a rocker switch in the centre console. The vehicle level is generally lowered by 10 mm in Sport, Sport+ and RACE mode, while in Comfort mode, the vehicle is lowered by 10 mm from a speed of 120 km/h, and raised back to normal level when the speed falls below 70 km/h.


In Trail and Sand modes, the suspension is raised by 55 mm to increase ground clearance on poor surfaces, and automatically lowered to normal level when the speed reaches 70 km/h. This function can also be controlled using the rocker switch. 

The all-wheel drive is controlled depending on the selected stage of the 3-stage Electronic Stability Program ESP – from sporty, with a focus on safety, to highly dynamic. To further improve traction the it has an electronically controlled locking differential at the rear axle as standard. The slip is thus suppressed at the inner wheel on bends, allowing the driver to accelerate out of corners earlier and with more power thanks to the improved traction. 

The GLE 63 Sis equipped with 400 mm x 38 mm brake discs at the front, plus 370 mm x 32 mm discs at the rear. As an option, a high-performance ceramic brake system can be ordered.  

As with all Mercedes-Benz products there are raft of options that can be added to the basic package including the AMG Night Package, MBUX Innovation Package, MBUX Augmented Reality for navigation, AMG Performance Exhaust system and Magic Vision Control among them.

 Richard Hammond collection on auction

Former Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond is funding his new business venture by offering eight of his personal vehicles to be sold by Silverstone Auctions at The Classic at Silverstone on Sunday, August 1. 

All proceeds are to support his new business venture The Smallest Cog, a classic vehicle restoration business that will be documented in Richard Hammond’s Workshop (working title), a brand-new original docuseries airing on discovery+ UK later this year. 


“The irony of me supporting my new classic car restoration business by selling some of my own classic car collection is not wasted on me” says Hammond.
 

He went on to add: “It is with a very heavy heart that they go, as they have a great deal of personal sentimental value, but they will be funding the future development of the business and giving life back to countless other classic vehicles.” 

Several of the classics are personal favourites of Hammond, with classic and limited-edition motorcycles he bought himself for his 40th and 50th birthdays on offer, as well as a much-loved family heirloom in the 1959 Bentley S2. 

The other lots include a stunning 1969 Porsche 911T, a 1927 Sunbeam Model 2 motorcycle, a classic 1999 Lotus Esprit Sport 350 which is number 5 of 48 built, a 1932 Velocette KSS Mk1 and a highly collectable 1977 Moto Guzzi Le Mans Mk1. The entire collection is being offered without reserve. 

Separate to his private collection, a widely publicised and beautifully restored Ford RS2000 was also due to go under the hammer the same weekend, but Hammond has deferred the release of this vehicle until the Practical Classics Classic Car & Restoration Show Sale in September 2021 which will be hosted by Silverstone Auctions’ sister company, Classic Car Auctions (CCA). This is to allow more time for The Smallest Cog to complete the car to their exacting standards.

More power and new looks for Porsche Macan 

Porsche has released the much updated Macan that gains performance along with a tweaked design and sport-air suspension as standard on the GTS. 

As the sporty flagship of the SUV line-up, the Macan GTS sits at the top of the range. Its 2,9-litre V6 biturbo engine now delivers 324 kW – an increase of 44 kW –  and it completes the 0 to 100 km/h sprint in 4,3 seconds when fitted with the Sport Chrono package and reaches a top speed of 272 km/h. 

The Macan S is now also equipped with a 2,9-litre V6 biturbo engine that produces 20 kW more power than before, with 280 kW. This propels the vehicle from a standstill to 100 km/h in 4,6 seconds while it has a top speed of up to 259 km/h.

 

A newly developed, turbo-charged four-cylinder engine with 195 kW serves as the entry point to the Macan world. It completes the standard 0 to 100 km/h sprint in 6,2 seconds and reaches a top speed of 232 km/h. 

All engines are coupled to the seven-speed Porsche dual-clutch transmission (PDK) and the Porsche Traction Management (PTM) all-wheel-drive system.

The new Macan models also offer a wide suspension bandwidth, balancing suspension comfort and sports car performance. The chassis has been optimised further and the Macan now responds more directly to the driving situation and road conditions, giving the driver even better feedback via the steering wheel.
 

For this purpose, elements such as the damper characteristics of the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) have been re-adapted specifically for this model. It actively and continuously regulates the damping force for each individual wheel. PASM is available as an option for the Macan and is standard for the S and GTS models.

On the Macan GTS with sport air suspension the body is lower by 10 millimetres and the dynamic benefits mean the suspension is 10% more rigid on the front axle and 15%t firmer on the rear axle compared with its predecessor.


 
It has a redesigned nose with an inlay in the exterior colour, while on the new GTS, the centre of the nose section as well as other elements are finished in black. The rear is now rounded off towards the road by a diffuser. Here and at the front end it features a new 3D structure, which is also optionally available for the car's sideblades. The LED headlights with the Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS) and Sport Design exterior mirrors are now standard on all models.

The new Porsche Macan offers a substantially enhanced interior and its new operating concept, which makes use of touch surfaces instead of tactile buttons, brings a clear structure to the cockpit. A new, shorter selector lever sits in the centre of the control module. 

The analogue clock at the top of the dashboard is now also standard equipment.

 

The Macan continues to offer many online functions and services as standard. These can be controlled via the 10,9-inch full HD touch display of the Porsche Communication Management or by means of voice commands. 

The Macan adopts the new multifunction and GT Sport steering wheels from the 911.

Besides the dynamic benefits and black highlights on the exterior, the GTS Sport package available only for the top model also contains specific and exclusive equipment for the interior. This includes 18-way sport seats, the Carbon interior package, Race-Tex upholstery with extended leather elements, various items with contrast stitching and GTS lettering in Python Green.

The Macan, which has seen 600 000 deliveries worldwide since its market launch in 2014, has a special role at Porsche: around 80% of all Macan buyers are new Porsche customers. In addition, the proportion of women buying the Macan has risen consistently in recent years and is the highest across all Porsche product lines.

Iconic Ford GT40 re-imagined with electric power

Petrolheads reading this may well begin to weep into their pretzels but the reality of electric motoring is reaching deep into the classic heart with news a spark-powered re-creation of the iconic Ford GT40 is on its way. 

Everrati, a technology company specialising in the redefining and futureproofing of automotive icons through the integration of advanced electric vehicle powertrains and Superformance, a leading manufacturer of 1960s-era continuation component sports cars, have formed a strategic partnership – with the first new model being an electrified version of the legendary GT40.


Everrati was founded to further the legacies of some of the most desirable and iconic cars in the world, redefining and precision re-engineering them with state-of-the-art electric drivetrains, maintaining and enhancing the character of the original. 

Each Everrati is fitted with a custom-designed electric power unit and battery system, leading to enhanced performance and a zero-emissions future.  

Superformance offers a full line of high-performance component cars celebrating some of the most iconic vehicles of all time. All vehicles are built under license from trademark holders including GM and SAFIR GT40, adding authenticity and value. Sold as a rolling chassis, a Superformance car can be configured with heritage or modern drivetrains. 

The Everrati and Superformance partnership will allow enthusiasts to drive an electric-powered GT40, with development of this first model already underway. A prototype chassis has been built and is being comprehensively adapted from ICE power to advanced electric propulsion at Everrati’s UK development centre in Upper Heyford, a former US air base in the English Cotswolds. 


As with all Everrati vehicles, meticulous attention to detail is being applied to key factors such as battery location and weight distribution to maintain and enhance the character and soul of the original. Further details on this first new model from the partnership and reimagined icon will be announced in the coming months.

“So many legendary cars were created by Anglo American partnerships during the 1960s. In fact, the very first GT40 was brought to life in the early Sixties by a UK-based team led by expat British engineer, Roy Lunn, at Ford Advanced Vehicles in Slough. Its body was even made by Abbey Panels in Coventry, before the finished car was shipped to the US for its unveiling the day before the New York Auto Show, in April 1964.
